Fall is here! Baseball playoffs have started, Football is mid-season and Hockey is around the corner. Many of us look forward to sweater and scarf season, while enjoying the beautiful changing colors outdoors. Around Athletes for Animals we find ourselves wrapping up our Fall Grant Recipients and planning for the exciting year ahead.
We are thrilled to award a total of $38,500 to Open Door Animal Sanctuary, Partners 4 Pets, Tabby’s Place, Dirk’s Fund, Holy Shih Tzu Rescue, Stray Rescue, BARC, SNIP Alliance, Five Acres Animal Shelter, Shelter Friends and 4 Paws 4 Rescue. Our grant funding for these organizations will help provide assistance for trap, neuter, return (TNR) programs, spay/neuter efforts, community outreach endeavors and with special medical needs for extraordinary vet care funds.
In early September we formed an A4A running team for the Five Acres Animal Shelter, Trails for Tails event! The fundraiser was their largest yet and our team alone helped raise over $2,000 for the hundreds of animals they save every year! Thank you to our Athlete Ambassador Brad Thompson that ran on our team as did current St Louis Blues defense Alex Pietrangelo. Next year, whether you plan to run the 5k or walk the 1 mile with your rescued dog, we would love to have you join us!
We also joined the worldwide coalition of organizations who helped raise awareness about the plight of millions of orphan pets around the world waiting for forever homes on Remember Me Thursday, September 25th. That evening we honored the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving forever home. Athletes for Animals invited 8 local organizations to Scottrade on the night of a St. Louis Blues pre-season game. Each group brought adoptable dogs and cats to the concourse, while we welcomed thousands of fans and encouraged them to sign our RMT banner and shine light on adoptable pets in need of homes now. Three of our Athlete Ambassadors were also named RMT luminaries, Anže Kopitar, Mark Buerhle and our founder David Backes. NHL Star Jeff Carter also partnered with RMT and the LA Kings to spread the message. The Mayor of St. Louis, Francis Slay, made a proclamation that the fourth Thursday of every September will be Remember Me Thursday in St. Louis. This proclamation was presented to the Backes Family before the game at center ice and was on display for all to see. Thank you Belleville Humane Society, Tenth Life, Animal House, Five Acres, Stray Rescue, St. Louis Senior Dog Project, Gateway Pet Guardians and St. Louis County Animal Control for joining us in this collaborative effort! #LightForPets
And lastly, should you find yourself in St. Louis and surrounding areas this month, please visit Treats Unleashed, the natural place for pets, at one of their 7 locations. We are their spotlight charity for October and proceeds from a fresh baked treat will be donated to our charity. You will also find a premium selection of food, dog and cat toys, collars, beds and more!
