The month of March has been filled with exciting news around Athletes for Animals. Our founders returned from the Olympics with 2 rescued pups, we held our first ever charity event and this weekend we are celebrating National Puppy Day. We are excited to share all this great work being done with our growing team of supporters!
The trip to Sochi, Russia gave us the opportunity to broadcast our mission on an international level. With the collaborative efforts of many we were able to work together and save two street pups, with the ultimate goal of bringing awareness to homeless animals in need everywhere. There are many to thank for their dedicated efforts, including NHL greats and their wives/girlfriends, Anze and Ines Kopitar, Jeff Carter and Megan Keffer and Drew Doughty and Nicole Arruda, among others. The generosity of many including the NHLPA and our charter company allowed us to save the animals without any major significant costs and most importantly, the pups are thriving and will be going home to their adoptive families, upon completion of their quarantine this next weekend. Kevin Shattenkirk’s, mom and dad will be adopting Sochi Junior and a fellow USA teammate, Derek Stepan and his fiancé Stephanie will be adopting Sochi Jake. You can read more about the stray dogs of Sochi and all of our efforts here.
Just last weekend, we hosted our first fundraiser as an organization. Stars of Sochi, was held at Fleming’s in St. Louis and with the generosity of our two presenting Gold Medal Sponsors, Nature’s Variety and Aston Martin, along with all of our amazing supporters, we successfully raised over $60,000! The night consisted of delicious food and wine, while our guests had the chance to bid on exclusive memorabilia and have their photo taken with the Blues Olympic Athletes. All of the funds will go to help support our mission and help us fulfill grants to rescues and shelters in need. Today we celebrate National Puppy Day and recently a few of our ambassadors showed their support by visiting a local shelter and cuddling with some adorable pups! Jake Long, offensive tackle with the St. Louis Rams and his wife Jackie, visited Five Acres Animal Shelter and snuggled up with some sweet pups. All of the dogs pictured are available for adoption and awaiting their forever home. Edmonton Oilers star, David Perron and his girlfriend Vanessa visited the Edmonton Humane Society and enjoyed giving love to these cuddly adoptable pups. Even if you don’t live in one of these areas, there are adoptable pups just like these in your own city and we encourage you to visit your local shelter to volunteer, foster or adopt!. Whether that be a puppy or a dog of any age, this is just another way we can show our communities, and future generations that your next dog can be adopted! Puppies and dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes are available for adoption visit www.adoptapet.com to find your next companion.
